The Galactic Star Cruiser: Signs of Whats to Come
Yesterday Morning, at the time of writing this article it was announced by countless media outlets specializing in theme park blogging the Disney’s Immersive Star Wars Galactic Star Cruiser Experience was closing dates during their October and November Voyages. While as a fan I enjoy how they now are only offering voyages over weekend periods I am quite surprised they gave us dates that we as the audience might actually use, as a critic I am appalled to see this occur rather than decreasing prices to increase audience demand. This will only prevent the hemorrhaging of money created by this star cruiser temporarily. It is like putting a bacta spray on a wound that was caused by a wampa attack instead of being submerged into the tank full of bacta. This was a misdiagnosis and will do more harm than good for the SWGSC, as it is proving further that Disney will have to change the attraction soon, especially now that reports have been made in regards to Disney doing renovations to the star cruiser, based off permits filed, that is set to take place during this period as well.
The discounts announced in the past two months were a first flawed attempt as it doesn’t seem like the DVC 30% off is worth it to DVC Members as well as the 50% offer made to cast members and the General Public Discount of $700 other resort hotels which focuses more on the other hotels and not on savings for the star cruiser. I am waiting for them to announce something even more laughable for Florida Residents or rerelease AP’s and add a discount for them as well, similar to the 30% off that DVC members get. The obvious solutions in which i have offered in past articles, would’ve fixed their issue on capacity without the need to shut down days, and possibly giving this experience some well needed press, but this increasing amount of discounts and now the date shutdowns confirms that the Galactic Star Cruiser is in reality Disney’s “Death Star”.
My solution would be to keep the current discounts as announced previously and now move on to providing a substantial AP Discount and a Florida Resident Discount to attempt to save the Star Cruiser. The AP discount however should require the sales of new top tier AP’s and the FL Res Discount should be aimed at winning back the people in the state of Florida following the controversy with the Parental Rights Act, where Disney Lost their Reedy Creek District and Self Governance. While obviously I am more creative than a numbers guy and always have been, the FL Res discount Disney offers should entice Floridians, and not only the 5% of Star Wars & Disney Parks fans who live in Florida who can Afford it but an enticing enough offer to allow Floridians who are Star Wars & Disney Parks fans who at this present time cannot afford it.
Something Disney needs to take into account is these are Star Wars fans, you are marketing to. I am sure you’ve seen the speed dating at Star Wars Celebration in the past they’re not pretty and many of them are single income households with friends who live in separate single income households, they are a minority group who Disney rarely markets to, but have been marketing to, just go to the parks see the culture of fans.Everytime I am in Galaxy’s Edge, at Hollywood Studios, I see not Disney Adults but single Star Wars adults in “Disney bounds” or costumes, many of which with friends, not always with Disney Lightsabers but some with the ultra expensive ultrasabers. Something Disney has right is Star wars fans spend tons of money on costumes and cosplay pieces and even on souvenirs and trips around the world to celebrate Star Wars, but one thing that they seem to have wrong is the amount we would spend on a limited excursion to LARP in Star Wars simply because of affordability and the economic climate by which this hotel is suffering because of.
As mentioned in a previous article Disney should hope to focus on making money on the souvenir side and the alcohol side of things rather than on the Experience itself. While inflation and supply issues hinder this in some capacity for the time being, I hope the GSC lasts as is until a new administration can take office and hopefully save our economy, allowing Disney as well as their suppliers to drop prices and thus rectify the current state of the GSC. Currently there is a demand for $15 an hour or more minimum wage nationwide, which is for obvious reasons impossible because as the price of goods and living gets higher these become impossibilities instead of realities. When the economy is booming and prices are lower for goods and services as well as the price of living then these pay raises can be met, and with pay raises capacity should theoretically return to the GSC. In the meantime however the margins for the SWGSC will become increasingly thinner as these flaws in the economy persist to degrade us. I would ask Disney to attempt to challenge the status quo of the current economy if they wish to maintain and increase the capacity of the GSC. rather than operate under the current cost, offer a profitable but still realistic option to guests to save the GSC from crashing into Comets, like many Disney park goers had on the original Star Tours years earlier.
